I agree with Scott Herhold's assessment (Page B1, April 22) that Bill Gates "has gone far beyond penance" for his former hard-edged self and sought out root causes of poverty: lack of adequate food, health care, school, sanitation and opportunity. Bill and Melinda Gates also recently acknowledged the American people for their generosity in funding the Global Fund for Health and other effective programs that save lives. Collectively we are able to spend far more than even the Gates Foundation on life-saving cures for AIDS, TB, malaria, and to provide vaccines for children. I too, thank the American taxpayers, our Reps. Zoe Lofgren, Mike Honda and Anna Eshoo, and Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer for their long-standing support of programs that save lives, offer hope and create opportunity.
