April 21 Readers' letters

Global fund can help educate children

I agree with Doug Henton (Opinion, April 20) on the importance of investing in education to build economic prosperity.

Right now there are 75 million primary school-aged children in poor countries who are still not in school, who need the chance to learn to read and write, helping to lift their families out of poverty.

President Barack Obama said in September 2008 that our nation should do its part by establishing a $2 billion Global Education Fund.

I thank Reps. Mike Honda, Zoe Lofgren and Anna Eshoo for supporting the Education for All Act, which creates a multilateral Global Education Fund, a partnership between rich and poor countries to create and fund sound national education plans to get all kids into school.
